Where Start Smart Utah Began

According to studies conducted by the Food Research & Action Center (FRAC), Utah has consistently ranked last for school breakfast participation in the entire nation.  In response, the Utah State Board of Education Child Nutrition Programs department partnered with the Utah Breakfast Expansion Team (UBET) to set goals and initiatives.  A plan was formulated to improve Utah legislation surrounding breakfast and provide students better access to breakfast in schools.

The partners in UBET consist of non-profit organizations, local school districts, universities, state departments and the Utah State Board of Education. Together the team has been successful in passing legislation which now requires breakfast programs and alternative service styles to be implemented in schools and secures flexibilities in funding to reimburse breakfast programs. With the support of UBET, the Utah State Board of Education Child Nutrition Programs continues to broaden schools breakfast programs to meet legislative regulations and feed hungry children across Utah.
